This novel narrates the tale of a young, sheltered,
very proper Scottish girl, Mary Mackenzie, who has been reared by a rigid, self-righteous, reticent widow in South Edinburgh.
The girl is sensitive, compassionate, and by nature drawn to people.
In 1903, she sets sail for China to marry her betrothed,
a military attaché in Peking.
But soon after her arrival, Mary falls into an adulterous affair
with a young Japanese nobleman, scandalizing the British community.
